Rua Cândido dos Reis, Almada

Since I decided to walk to Cristo Rey, I took the first street that led to the monument at Largo Alfredo Dinish.

Cacilhas

Once the main street of Cacilhas, it is now a pedestrian zone for tourists.

Cacilhas

At the beginning of the street is quite wide, here is the Church of Our Lady of the Good Event (Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso), built in 1759. The Chapel of Santa Luzia (Ermida de Santa Luzia) used to stand on this site, but it was destroyed by the earthquake of 1755. Cacilhas escaped the impact of a giant wave formed as a result of the earthquake, so the new church was consecrated in the name of the patroness of the city, who protected the inhabitants from an even more terrible catastrophe. The interior of the church is decorated with monochrome ceramic panels (azuleiju). The church is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10: 00 to 12: 00 and from 15: 00 to 19: 00.

Cacilhas

The length of the street is small, a little more than 100 meters, but there are many restaurants and souvenir shops.

Cacilhas

Since it was Siesta time and they were all closed, all I could do was look at the parrots in a cage outside one of the shops.

Cacilhas

The street is built up with old houses of two or three floors, lined with ceramic tiles. It seems to be the only street in Almada that has a traditional Portuguese look, everything else is modern concrete boxes.

Cacilhas

At the end of the street is the Largo dos Bombeiros Voluntários Square, which translates as the Square of Volunteer Firefighters.

Cacilhas

The red building houses the Almada Municipality Tourist Information Center. I recommend you to look here, here you will be told that in addition to the monument to Cristo Rei in the town there are other interesting places.
