Garden of Vasco da Gama (Jardim Vasco da Gama, on the map) which is adjacent to the square named after Alfonso de Albuquerque (Jardim da Praça Afonso de Albuquerque). In the center of the square is a column-monument to the Duke of Albuquerque (Afonso de Albuquerque, 1453-1515), also called "the Great Albuquerque", the main colonial architect of the Portuguese Empire. Under his leadership, Portuguese strongholds along the Indian ocean were built-Goa in India (1510) and Malacca in Malaysia (1511), after which Portugal gained control of the Maritime trade routes from Asia to Europe, displacing the Arabs, who had long held these communications in their hands.

The belém tower (Torre de Belém, on the map) was built in 1515-1521 under the direction of architect Francisco de Arruda in honor of Vasco da Gama's discovery of the sea route to India. The building was built in the Manueline style, popular in the Renaissance, but now almost forgotten. In 1983, the tower was declared a world cultural heritage site by UNESCO.
