Jerónimos Monastery Church Interiors

After admiring the wonderful architecture of the Jeronimush monastery, we will look into its church. The western portal is decorated with bas-reliefs by the French master Nicolau de Chanterene, completed in 1517. Flanking the entrance on the left is King Manuel I and his patron Saint Jerome, on the right is his second wife, Queen Mary, and Saint John the Baptist. The niches above the entrance depict scenes of the Annunciation, the Nativity of Christ and the Adoration of the Magi. Rib vaults supported by six octagonal carved pylons cover a space 30 meters wide. Thanks to this design, the church withstood the catastrophic earthquake of 1755. Lisbon was razed to the ground, but the Jeronimos Monastery received only minor damage. The Renaissance-style altar was created in the middle of the 16th century by order of King John III's wife Catherine of Austria. To the left of the entrance rests the great discoverer Vasco da Gama, the success of whose Indian expedition became the starting point of the construction of the monastery.
