After passing under the arch, we will come out on the Shopping area or prasa do Comercio. At the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, on the instructions of king Manuel I, a beautiful Palace was built on this site, which gave its name to the remarkable architectural style "manuelino". During the earthquake of 1755, the Palace was completely destroyed and Prime Minister Sebastian Pombal (Marquis di Pombal), who led the reconstruction of the city, ordered to clear this place of ruins and break up a large square in their place. The official name is not very well used in everyday life, and citizens still call the square "Palace".

The square and the arc de Triomphe became symbols of the rebirth of Lisbon from the ruins.
